The Aral Sea Wetlands Project, jointly implemented by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of Uzbekistan, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), plays a critical role in enhancing the ecological stability of the Aral Sea region. This initiative directly contributes to the objectives outlined in the Presidential Decree of November 23, 2023, which approved the National Program for the Sustainable Development of the Aral Sea Region and the Promotion of Innovation and Green Technologies for 2024–2028.
As part of this national effort, the creation of extensive “green belts” around urban centers in the Aral Sea region is expected to reduce environmental pressure, improve air quality, and restore degraded landscapes. The Aral Sea Wetlands Project aligns closely with the goals of the “Green Space” national initiative, supporting large-scale landscaping and ecosystem rehabilitation.
Despite the catastrophic drying of the Aral Sea, the basin still hosts critical ecological zones, including lakes, wetlands, and riparian corridors, which serve as vital habitats for biodiversity. These include key stopover points along a major migratory bird route, making the conservation of these areas globally significant for avian species.
The main objective of the project is to prevent further degradation of natural ecosystems, enhance the resilience of landscapes, and support sustainable livelihoods for local communities. It focuses on maintaining and restoring the ecological functions of protected natural areas through integrated water and land management, while introducing climate-smart and green technologies.
Ultimately, the Aral Sea Wetlands Project is a cornerstone in Uzbekistan’s broader efforts to achieve environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and land degradation neutrality in one of the most ecologically vulnerable regions of the country.
